I am starting a new topic for what is now Tropical Storm Maria. Some models have been showing threats to the U.S. East Coast, though it is too early to say what if any U.S. impacts there will be. In the meantime, this storm is of significant concern for the Leeward Islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and quite possibly the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This will be definitely worth tracking over the next several days.

Maria is currently in an area of not too high wind shear, and warm ocean temperatures, I would not rule out rapid strengthening. Maria is the further west of the two storms with the tropical storm icon (Lee is the further east of the two):

Directly hit for PR looking likely, could be a Cat 4/5 - nasty Hurricane on satellite.

I know the focus in the U.S. is on Puerto Rico, but there is quite the story developing for the island nation of Dominica. Dominica (Population: Around 73,000) is on the verge of what will likely be a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. You can look at the NOAA Satellite and see that unless there's a wobble at the last minute, this will directly hit Dominica. It's an absolute disaster scenario for Dominica, and unlike with Barbuda (which has Antigua) there's no other island for residents of the nation to evacuate to if the island becomes practically uninhabitable.

It is also scary how much Maria has developed in just the last few hours, as per satellite. The eye has become much more visible. Maria is benefiting from warm waters and encountering practically no wind shear.
