Geek I always have to laugh, radiational cooling will be your "epitaph" you quite like this term.. It has only dropped to 30 here in Rock Hill, and for the first time in 3 weeks, yesterday and today, dripping sounds are keeping me awake. I have these roof warming wires built in to most of my western exposure, and I have not had to use the this year, but I did put them on today to expedite the rapid thaw of the snow on the roof. If it is done to slowly, leeks tend to happen. The thaw has also called for slippery conditions on the snow, makes a glaze.

SNOWAMP -- It's already engraved on my headstone. LOL
UHI (Urban Heat Island) effect in effect now. mid 40's in urban locales while low 30's/upper 20's in RC favored areas.
This is the first real ideal night for RC (radiational cooling) we have had in a long time if I remember correctly. Some snow pack out there could help drop those temps a little lower.
Down to 39.8 from 40.5 a few mins ago. Here we go!

Geek, down to 29.1 now with a dew point of 26. 86% humidity.
And you're right with the radiational cooling point. We haven't had many calm nights this entire winter. I've recorded wind gusts > 18mph virtually every day since the 17th of January. Haven't had strong HP overhead to let winds go calm at night.

Yes it's about time we had an ideal night for RC. You are right winds have been non-stop for the past month. Hate those damn winds, make it feel colder than it is and screw up our RC! I will have none of that! LOL
It's so interesting to sit here on the computer (while doing some HW of course) while watching my console and see the temp drop off then start to bump up as a small deck of clouds roll over, then the deck passes and temps begins to drop off once again. I'm a nut.
Anway 39.6 here 48% humidity dew point 21. Potential is to drop off into the lower 20's. We'll see how far I get. I noticed my area tends to take it's jolly ole time to drop off. I start off sometimes 7-10 degrees warmer than WEATHERBOWL in Nassau but come daybreak, I'm 1-2 degrees warmer. RC is a very interesting process.

Never saw radiational cooling happen this quickly, especially in my area. Must have something to do with snowpack?

Not to beat it into the ground, but last night was very interesting WRT radiational cooling and micro-climates in and around NYC.
I bottomed out @ 28.7 degrees. Weatherbowl (who lives in Nassau Co) started off 7 degrees cooler then me yesterday evening, wound up @ 28.1 this morning, only a .6 degree difference from me. My area takes a little while longer to drop but eventually catch up to other areas. I believe the low @ LGA and CPK was 39-40, that's a 10-11 degree difference in only a matter of a few miles. I've seen even greater. You can go from warm roadways on the LIE in Maspeth to freezing roadways in a matter of a few miles. Could be quite dangerous to those who aren't aware @ the differences on otherwise mild nights in urban areas.
Guess it's true what they say about radiational cooling, it's wasted cold air. It's not like it stuck around and helped keep temps low for todays clipper as most had rain today. It does help preserve snowpack already on the ground though.
Robbbs--your low was 26.5 as per your weather station..funny how mountain peaks stay warmer than valleys as some places in your general area @ a lower elevation were in the low 20's. That cold air sinks to the lowest spot it can find. Crazy how I was only 2 degrees warmer than you last night. Ok, I will save my banter for next time.
Rant over
