Ever think an island can disappear?

"Until 2000, the sea levels rose about 3 millimeters (0.12 inches) a year, but over the last decade they have been rising about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) annually, he said."

Am I missing something here. According to the article (the above quote) the sea level has risen .2 inches per year for the past 10 years. That is equal to 2 inches over the entire 10 year period. These 2 inches made the island disappear?

It also says in the article that the 2 nations have been interested in this island for 30 years. So doing the math , 30 years ago the island sea level would have been about 4.5 inches lower. Does it seem like it could have been much of an island if in 30 years a 4.5 inch rise in the ocean made the island disappear. I wonder if erosion had more to do with the disappearance. It is interesting the island disappeared but it sounds like some global warming hype has been thrown in for good measure.

It has happened here before..Just off the rockaways there was an Island called Hog Island.It got wiped out by the 1893 hurricane
