The intensity of that storm is why many folks claim it's the most intense blizzard they ever experienced - and yes it was scary to be outside in that Friday night storm with the thunder, lightning, 50mph winds, constant whiteout conditions, and sub 20 temps. Imagine combining the last three items with many close CTG bolts and thunder like you heard in that video.

Here is a very old video of Jim Cantore in the middle of a thundersnow storm, from December 7, 1996, somewhere in Massachusetts, with very heavy snow falling at the time:

Given some of the snowfall rates I saw last year I d'ont know how on earth that was 4" an hour snow. When I've had snowfall rates of 3-4" an hour you'd never be able to see much beyond Cantore and you most certainly wouldn't see that street lamp so clearly. To me that's about 1-2" an hour wet snow that he's in.
