Brief warm up followed by a cold frontal passage and probably more cold, and possible storminess after that.

I see a lot of people like the 2nd week of Jan for a big storm.
I'm a little skeptical on that one. That's prime time for january thaw in my opinion. I'm thinking we get a little relief from winter's wrath for at least a few weeks after New Year's. No blowtorch or anything extreme like that. What's the NAO's status going into the next few weeks?

Both the Euro and GFS Emsembles take the -NAO block and retrograde it again into North Central Canada by days 8-10

Looks like the warm up may not be as warm as predicted. NWS dropped the temps to the low 40s in my area and NYC to the mid 40s. Maybe crack 50 in Central NJ.

Well, the snowpack will also have an effect on that.

We really have to watch late next week into the weekend.
We'll have energy coming out of the southwest, with energy rotating around a PV in Canada. If the -NAO retrograde happens again (many of the models and ensembles hint at this) then we'll have to watch for any potential interaction with the two streams.
Nothing can happen too, so at this point, we should be looking at the players, and seeing where (if they) set up on the playing field.
I like this time frame so far.

Looks like the new year comes in quiet. An early January thaw.

A lot of people like the 4th-12 timeframe for another big storm a long the coast. The gulf looks like it will be open for business.

I wouldn't downplay the warm-up. NWS forecasts have busted badly both yesterday and today, with temps higher than forecast. Already today, many places are in the 40's in NJ at 11:00 am and climbing. My temp is 32 but will probably reach the upper 30's (reached 35 here yesterday despite a forecast high in the upper 20's). I don't think 50's are out of the question even for NYC this weekend and no days are forecast to have highs below freezing for at least a week. Shame to have a nice snowpack and lose much of it.

Take a look at the effect of snow pack on temps. Generally mid/upper 30s from Philly to Boston, mid to upper 40s in DC where they had basically nothing, and low 40s in Raleigh where they had a bit more than DC.
I'm at 37 right now with a solid 25" snow cover still.
