Some of these 30"+ totals came from trained spotters and/or cocorahs. How do you think they measured?

On their decks , trained spotter means Crap , they really donít train anyone . I went to one of those classes and itís mainly focused on tstorms and tornadoes ect

Nick said on FB that he doubts all of the 30"+ readings from the area, especially the one in Mount Arlington.
I got about 20" on our deck table. I should do one of the trainings. What are the really proper methods? I've never been entirely clear on it, usually just resorting to an average, which I have not done for this storm because I didn't really want to trudge through it.

On cocorahs they say to use at least a 16x16 white board. They do not mention clearing off. Otherwise they say to measure in multiple unobstructed spots and take an average, which from what i remember is similar to the NWS training. But yeh the NWS training does not focus too much on winter weather.

Clearing off is not acceptable anymore unless it changed to rain and back to snow . Thatís the only time itís ok to clear the board

Deck tables are ok if itís a heavy wet snow and not much drifting , this past storm wouldnít be accurate to use a deck table. Take a Board and paint it white and put in your yard .

Good info! Honestly though, even with the white board, I can't see how anyone can get anything other than a rough estimate when you have a lot of the blowing and drifting. If you put it in the middle of a yard, wouldn't it tend to blow away from the board leading to an undercount?
