(New York - WABC, June 18, 2007) - The FDNY confirms to Eyewitness News that there was some type of explosion and fire in Midtown Wednesday evening. It's happening near 41st Street between 3rd and Lexington Avenue.
Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen is at the scene where steam and debris is pouring out of a hole in the street next to a school bus. Several blocks are being evacuated. Jeff Rossen reports it smells like sulfur at the scene.
"The building shook a little bit and small particles of rocks came to our window at the 27th floor ... so then we decided to get out of there .... I came outside and rocks came at me and I dashed out with the rocks falling on me," one man told us.
People were seen running from the scene, screaming and shouting. One man told us it was total chaos when this happened.
Officials say it is not terrorism-related.
Eyewitness News has learned that the explosion has created a four-alarm fire. Fire and emergency crews are at the scene. We are told at least one person was injured.
Eyewitness News' Stacey Sager is also at the scene and reports that Con Ed is now at the scene.
Subway service is now affected: 4, 5 and 6 service is passing Grand Central and the shuttle is suspended.

one day I'm glad I didn't have to be in the city today. even though grand central is open it's hard to get to without any subway service and only two of the entrances are open in grand central terminal.
