Corzine warns of higher property tax, tuition without his toll plan
Posted by pcox February 14, 2008 08:35AM
Gov. Jon Corzine said New Jersey property taxes and tuition may soar and hospitals close if the state doesn't raise more money to solve fiscal woes.
Speaking this morning on radio station WOR, Corzine discussed plans to significantly increase highway tolls to pay state debt and fund transportation work.
The plan hasn't been embraced by the public and lawmakers, but Corzine said just cutting state spending cannot solve state financial problems.
People who think that, he said, are essentially suggesting cutting state aid for towns, schools, hospitals and state colleges and universities, moves he said would force up property taxes and tuition and make hospitals close.
But Corzine said he continues to be open to compromise to lessen the toll increases, as long as the alternative addresses state fiscal problems responsibly.
