Why is everyone so confident of these backlash snows? I have heard it many times in the past and it pans out less than 50% of the time.

so with more snow at the end and the temps continue to drop are we looking at something similar to '78? lots of ice and some snow on top?

Define screwjob? I stand by my thread from a few days ago -- and my posts last night -- this is all frozen precipitation for NYC/newark area. Cannot rule out a very brief period of rain for NYC; however, this should end up as a decent event for coastal regions as well. Im confident in a major to historic 1-2 foot snow from the poconos/catskills up through northern new england (locally 24"+) -- at least 6-12" for NW NJ with the front-end/backlash combined -- ice at the height of the storm. I'm thinking a few inches of snow for LI, central Jersey prior to the sleet/rain transition tomorrow morning -- then back to snow. How quickly that secondary low becomes the dominant storm is key for areas SE OF I-95 -- radar trends are suggesting the primary may be weakening quicker the progged. We'll see. Not game set match yet for the coast.

The faster the coastal low takes over the better chance to cut the warm air off, since any low pressure to the west of us pushes up a southwesterly component.
