One thing to note upper levels have had very warm layers. The 850 low is bringing in warm air, while the surface LOW developing off carolinas in allowing arctic air in to the northeast. Both mechanisms at the same time is a recipe for disaster. Some people may have temps in the upper teens with sleet and or freezing rain.

Historic ice-storm on the way folks. More later.

We had a generator installed for our house this past summer,  my gut feeling tell's me it maybe it called upon for it's services if this ice storm takes place.  Best be prepared then to assume.

The last big ice storm in NYC was back in the 70's,  it was a Sunday in December & I was at Shea Stadium to see the Bills-Jets game that day.  I think we losed power for 3 days after that storm.

When WAS the last ice storm in the NYC area??  Last one I recall had to be in the 70s, I was just a kid.  I do recall the tree's sounding so creepy when the wind blew making the ice crack off them.  It would be great to see that again (as long as I'm home, of course!).

i remember a winter with about 13 ice storms in the 90's.  Don't remember the exact year, but am thinking 91-92.  Here in Morris County, we had a few of those storms with significant accum...at least half inch.  But that didn't compare to the historic storm that hit New England and canada....went to Vermont that year and was astounded at the damage to the forrests.

Major ice storm here in Jan 2004.

It was 25 F all night with a driving rain. There was  3/4 to 1 inch of ice on everything. Doesn't happen too often where I live because we usually sneak above freezing.

Actually, there were a few that year but one was the worst.

Now mostly snow here again.
2011-2012 Accumulating Snow and Ice

October 29: 3.0 inches
January 21 - 3.1 inches
February 8 - 0.75 inches
February 11 - 0.5 Inches
Total to-date - 7.4 inches

Lowest temperature -- January 4: 10 F

I wasn't a NJ resident during the 90s.  Lived in Alaska, of all places!  No snow shortage there, but at least we're not shoveling our roofs!  There IS such a thing as too much snow!

Places should be changing to some snow now before the real ice gets in.

LOL!  You missed winter and I missed summer!  The beach just isn't as appealing when their huge chunks of ice floating around in it.  Gotta admit, Jersey is a spendy state, but you do get every season.

How long did you live there before you decided to move back?

Sorry, I saw you post it when reread your post.  Only took you a year, took me 7 years of protesting before I got to leave.  Spent 3 years in Arizona after that.  Went from 1 extreme to another!  I liked the desert better.  Those long, dark winters can get to you.  4 hrs of daylight just isn't enough!  Summers were on the cool side and sunny all day and night.  It was different, that's for sure!
