Rangers bad boy Sean Avery, unconscious and not breathing, was rushed to a Manhattan hospital Wednesday in cardiac arrest just hours after his team's playoff loss, sources said.
Avery, 28, arrived at St. Vincent's Medical Center about 3 a.m., a hospital source said. Five hours earlier, the Rangers lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a Stanley Cup playoff game at Madison Square Garden.
He remained in the intensive care unit this afternoon, the hospital source said.
Avery, traded to the Rangers last year from Los Angeles, lives in Manhattan. The single winger is known for dating a bevy of celebrities, including Rachel Hunter and Elisha Cuthbert.
In March, the Daily News revealed that Avery's name and private cell phone number were in a huge client database for a Manhattan prostitution ring. He was listed as a $500 client of brothel Maison de L'Amour, although he adamantly denied using the hooker service.
There was no immediate word on what happened to Avery before he was taken to the hospital. His teammates were expected at St. Vincent's this afternoon.
Last night's 5-3 loss put the Rangers behind 3-0 in their seven-game series with Pittsburgh. Avery played in last night's game and picked up an assist on the Rangers' second goal.
A source close to the team confirmed Avery had been rushed to the hospital, but declined to offer specifics.
One round earlier in the playoffs, Avery drove Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur crazy with his antics - to the point that the Devil refused to shake Avery's hand when the series ended.
His face-guarding of the goalie even led the league to institute a new penalty, quickly dubbed "The Avery Rule."
The six-year veteran, with his $1.9 million salary, came to the Rangers in a five-player February 2007 deal. In just 29 games, he led the team in penalty minutes.
The combative Canadian led the entire league in penalty minutes in the 2005-06 season.
Avery is known for his off-ice game, too, with Maxim magazine once describing No. 16 on the Rangers as No. 1 in Hollywood hookups.

Wow that's crazy. Of course they have to mention the part about the hookers. I don't even like the guy but what does that have to do with the story. Unreal.

Update:
apparently, after the story broke, the team has clarified the situation with an announcement that he had a lacerated spleen.
"Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Sean Avery suffered a lacerated spleen in Tuesday night’s game, and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
He was taken to St. Vincent’s hospital after the game, and was admitted following a CT scan. He is expected to make a full recovery during the off-season."
The team also denied a published report in the New York Daily News that Avery had been taken to a Manhattan hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
The Rangers said Avery was admitted to St. Vincent's Medical Center following a CT scan and is expected to make a full recovery. Avery walked into the medical facility with team doctor Andrew Feldman, and the two took a car to the hospital, not an emergency vehicle, the team said.
Pretty irresponsible of the News to initially report it the way they did.

The volatile Avery won't play again this season, said his agent, Pat Morris. Avery played through the injury in last night's game and picked up an assist on the Rangers' second goal.

I completely agree with you guys. Utter irresponsibility on the part of The Daily News. Journalism 101- Check and RE-CHECK your sources.
Anyway, I'm glad that Avery will be OK. Regardless of my feelings about him as a hockey player, he's still a human being.
