As of Friday nights win against Baltimore, and Boston and Tampa winning their games, the Yankees have a magic elimination number of 1. They said the Tampa Bay Rays only have to win one more game to enter the playoffs. So, does that mean that the Yankees are truely dead from even making it in the Wild Card? If not, whats the point of them still playing.

Because the games are on the schedule. And as Joe Girardi said when explaining why he benched Robbie Cano after he didn't go hard after a ground ball he doesn't care what your record is or where you are in the standings you go out and you play the game the way its supposed to be played every day. I think these guys (on all teams) lose site of the fact that their job is to PLAY a game. I'm not saying they don't work hard and aren't extremely talented people. But any job that involves the word "play" should not be taken for granted as to how lucky you are to be there.

Well said Jimrin1967. A player will also feel better about themselves knowing they did not give up (although some may not realize it). People still come to watch and paid to do so, give them all you can. There are very few jobs in life that people will pay to see, anyone that has one will hopefully appreciate it.

It's a matter of pride also. You want to be able to say that you gave it all you had, no matter what. This way you can look back with no regrets. Your best isn't always good enough to win, but you can live with that if you left it all on the field. Plus, I think as an athlete, you always want to win, even if the stakes aren't very high. They're competitive people by nature.

Well the elimination for the Yanks to win the division is 1 and 2 from being eliminated in the wildcard. If the Rays win or Yanks lose, the Yanks will be eliminated from the division. If the Redsox win or the Yanks lose, the number will be 1 game in the wildcard. Now if the Redsox win and the Yanks lose, then they are eliminated from the wildcard also.

I think I may have said this here before, but Joe DiMaggio was asked once why he always played so hard no matter the score or standings. He said something like, "Because someone may be seeing me play for the first time. Or the last time."

I think that's what some players forget about today. Even if you're out of contention, someone spent their hard-earned money to come watch you play today, so give it everything you have.
