I'd rate it a B+. After a fickle December, sustained cold, snow a bit above average thus far, several ice storms here, 3 below zero days. Only thing missing for an A is a blockbuster snowstorm and there's still time.

I will rate it a B...I agree that we need a biggie, 18 plus inches, like I used to have I am sick of the solid ice pack, everyone I know are having leaks in ther homes, and I am dreading the warmup this weekend because we have so much ice, hard snow and snow pack. But, I cannot complain too much, the lake has been frozen better than last year, kids are getting good skating time.

I would give it an A-. We had the early snow that was fun. Since, we have had snow cover for a good stretch of time now. I think its a bit more than a month.
To get to an A or A+, I agree with Robbbs. We need a good storm. Min 12 inches.

B-
The # of ice storms hurt my grade a little. One storm of 6" would bring it back up to a B. Give me a foot and i'll make it an A-.

B- to B.
On the plus side- No January thaw to speak of, which is unusual, great ski slopes, and preserves the minimal snow cover
On the down side, no biggie, lots of nuisance snow and ice.
I'm 'just' old enuff to recall many ski trips on the school buses to VT and NH in the early-mid '70s, and was always amazed at the size of the snow piles along the interstate guard rails and in the parking lots. And it was considered 'normal'. Those are a distant memory.

B-, because the temps have varied. In Dec, the temps wee above avg for the most part while in Nov it was below avg when it should be the other way around. We need some more snow!!!

I'd give it a B- so far, would've been a C+ if not for the last 6.3" snowstorm.
We've been pretty chilly this winter, especially in comparison to recent years. Not extraordinary cold though for the DJ combined period, I'm at -0.3 right now. My Dec was +3.0 and Jan was -2.0.
Snowfall -- the nickel and dime events have managed to get me up to 17.6", which is slightly above normal thru Feb 5th.
Like others have said the one missing element is a 12"+ snowstorm, which would allow me to give this winter at least a B+. An "A" winter to me constitutes a 40"+ total, and an "A+" winter is 50"+. If we finish 28-39", that's a B+/A- IMO.

The cold was brutal in January and we have had tons of storms. The snow pack has been solid here since New Year's Eve. The only thing missing this winter is a blockbuster storm in our area. If that does happen it will bump my grade to an A.

I'm above average snowfall, but I've only had 1 storm over 6" (12/19). I'd rather have three 8" events than eight 3" events.

Being a big outdoor winter sport person it has been perfect. I would say an A+ The waterfalls are great for ice climbing. The ice storms gave us a great snow base for snowshoeing and XC skiing. All the rocks are covered and every little few inches of snow we get on top of the packed snow/ice makes things perfect. I could not ask for a better winter. I hate the real big storms because it makes it harder to ski and snowshoe in. You have to break trail etc... and you cant cover ground as much. Plus it ruins all that good ice for climbing.

Quite a difference in opinions so far with the range from B- to A+. Beyond the usual perception differences, it may also be related to a good deal of variance across our region this winter. From my perspective, the biggest factor in my B+ grade is the persistent snow cover from about mid December through today. That defines winter for me more than any other factor.

I would give it a B. Plenty of storms, although wimpy ones, decent amount of snow and cold.

B-. Too much ice, too much wasted cold, too much December inconsistency and lets not forget shirtsleeve Christmas eve warmth here in central NJ. But we still have February to change my opinion.
Quite a difference in opinions so far with the range from B- to A+.
Robbbs,
Snowshoes A+ is based on sport and outdoor activity which means 95/96 would have been a failure so I discount it as a true weather viewpoint.

I would give it a B minus for the Hudson Valley. Too many small storms that could be considered nuisances. Too many of these 3 inch storms that end up as sleet. Makes for annoying cleanup and slippery driveways. Two parties were altered because of these annoying little storms. We need to get more complete snow storms.

Long time viewer, first time poster, lol. I would rate this winter as a B so far, after the last 2 winters does not take much to give a B grade in my book. Agree with all, 1 nice 10"~12" event can bring rating to A-, add an additional late Feb early March storm and it's a solid A.
