Breathtaking scenes this morning -- although, unfortunately with the beauty came thousands of power outages. Nevertheless, I took advantage of the sun shining this morning.

Posted Image

Sun's rays shining thru ice. Difficult to pick up with the camera - but the ice makes a perfect prism -- rainbow colors.

Finally a distance shot -- the camera doesn't do it justice:

Great pics storm.  thanks.  Over the last 20 years or so I can remember quite a few times when I've seen a very similar sight up in Wantage and also on Schooley's Mtn.  I never really took enough time out to take pics though.  Yours came out great.

Thanks. I made sure to take some pictures as it's not often we get an ice storm here. This was one to remember. Last similar occurance was '94 -- then prior to that -- 70's I believe. We had minor icing in Jan 2000. You can even see how narrow that band of freezing rain was -- several miles north of me was all sleet in Icehater's area -- several miles SE of me was mainly rain.

WOW

any problems with your power?

Well over 10K people without power through last night from Freehold eastward through Howell, Tinton Falls, Red Bank, ect. However, was lucky I didn't lose any here. Winds gusted over 40mph last night and heard sounds of crashing branches every so often. Thankfully not as many trees to bring down the lines in my area.

Glad to hear you did not lose power. Never remember seeing it that bad in  NJ. The last time I saw ice like that was  around 20 yrs ago. My uncle has a farm in the Mohawk Valley and it was in the low teens and pouring rain. The cold air never left the Valley. I might even have that photo

Storm, impressive photos. What was your temp at the height of the freezing rain?

Storm, impressive photos. What was your temp at the height of the freezing rain?

Robbbs, began the storm at 19.6 degrees and sleet Tuesday evening. My temps held steady between 22-24 degrees throughout the overnight -- that's when the big time icing occured -- between about 3am-7am. Temp never made it past 25 during the precipitation. Once it was over, we briefly shot up to 28.2 for the high prior to plummeting into the mid 10's yesterday afternoon. It was a COLD freezing rain -- the kind of temps you'd see in a fluffy snowstorm.

Storm, great pix. You had a ton of freezing rain there. Today I noticed the thinnest of glazes on trees and particularly on the rocks that make up the waterfall in my pool. the only way i even knew it was there is the sun reflection on it. So we must have had a very brief freezing rain mix here before I got up yesterday. Certainly that didn't hapen when I was up as that was a non-stop "snowy" sleet and it was blowing around on the ground. I define sleet in 3 stages - snowy sleet (100% frozen), regular sleet (mainly frozen) and rainy sleet (baerely frozen in part).

Ice, thanks. Very impressive scenes this morning with the sun. Not too often we see an icing event like this. Apparently to my east over Little Silver, Red Bank, Tinton Falls, and Long Branch were hit even harder with the freezing rain.

My January 1995 ice storm pix. This was the Storm Robbbs was referring to where it rained at 18 degrees. It did that in Freehold too in that storm. I have others of this phenomenal storm (1.4' QPF into air that never got above 22 degrees and with no sleet at all) but they are missing in action with my 96 blizzard pix.

No the whole area had freezing rain well into Rockland county. The sleet line was near Poughkeepsie in that storm. The Mets were warning everyone in NJ from the far NW to the deepest Se of major ice. It was a pure freezing rain storm for the whole state. Even Albany had sleet/freezing rain. Far east in central and eastern Mass including Boston there was 18" of snow. The deep air cold waas actually eastern NE into Maine. a rare sttorm where it was better to be in Boston which got buried vs Western mass which got ice. Winter 94/95 was a strange winter with constant freezing rain set-ups but usually after it snowed. This one storm was freezing rain from start to finish though - everywhere.

Storm/Lab/Ice -- Thanks for sharing your pics.

Storm -- Had no idea the freezing rain was that bad in Manalapan. Crazy stuff. That's what happens when you get all that moisture and no sleet pellets inbetween. LOL

That was definitely a wild storm with wild swings within relatively short distances.

I am a new member and I believe I am just east of you (Northern Tinton Falls/Colts Neck line).  We had a tremendous ice storm and just north about 3 miles they have no ice on trees at all.  Huge amount of tree damage.  If someone can tell me how to post pics I will be glad to share some of mine.

Great board.  I'm learning something new every day.  Thanks
