Summer Outlook 2010


With the historic snow season behind us, it is time to look ahead towards the upcoming summer; will it bring unseasonably cool temperatures and plentiful rainfall, much like last summer? Will we scorch with day after day of 90 degree heat? Or will it be a run of the mill, near normal summer, temp and precip wise? I will attempt to answer those questions in this discussion. There are a number of indicators which need to be examined in order to piece together the puzzle of the next three to four months.

1)ENSO – the strong El Nino of 2009-10 has been weakening rapidly over recent weeks, with region 3.4 values plummeting from strong, to moderate, and now heading into weak territory. This decline to near-neutral will continue through the remainder of May and into June, in fact, there is strong evidence that a La Nina event will ensue by the mid to latter part of the summer.

Note the following sea surface temperature anomalies from February 7th, 2010, and the most recent SSTA profile from early May. The intense positive anomalies in the central tropical Pacific have been eroded significantly in conjunction with a strengthening negative PDO (colder SST’s in the northern and eastern Pacific). The Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) saw its 4th quickest drop on record, from +1.383 to +0.875 over the past two months. This is part and parcel of the reversal in the PDO decadal phase, which switched from warm to cold back in the late 1990s; however, now we’re seeing a stronger and likely more persistent dive into negative territory. What this all means – the strong El Niño of the past 6 months was a temporary delay in the inevitable, which is a transition to more cold ENSO events (La Nina’s) over the coming decades as we see the negative PDO gain control of the playing field. El Nino’s can and will occur in this regime, but they shouldn’t be as frequent or intense as they are during the positive/warm PDO decadal phase. On a related note, this will also mean rapidly falling global temperatures over the next year.





2) Global patterns – the reversal we’re seeing with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI – the atmospheric air pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin) is remarkable, and on its own would suggest that a La Nina event of at least moderate intensity is oncoming over the next 4-8 months. While this is possible, I’m not sure I’m ready to go that far just yet, although weak La Nina ENSO conditions by the second half of summer is a virtual lock in my mind.

Let’s examine moderate and strong El Nino events and their SOI reversals by the following spring/summer. For reference – negative SOI values generally indicate the presence or approach of a warm/El Nino, while positive SOI values usually suggest a La Nina is imminent.

1958: Below are the SOI sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies for January through September:

-3.8 -1.6 -0.5 0.2 -1.5 -0.2 0.4 1.0 -0.7

Note the SOI was negative through June, briefly switched positive in July and August prior to turning slightly negative again in September.
ENSO region 3.4 numbers for that same time period (January to September). For reference – weak: +0.5 to +0.9, moderate: +1.0 to +1.4, strong: +1.5 or greater

Weak Nino conditions persisted through June. In other words, the slow reversal in SOI values mirrored the slow turnaround in Nino 3.4 readings. There is a distinct connection between these two teleconnections, often with a 1-3 month lag time as history shows us.

1966: SOI values for January-September:

-2.8 -1.1 -2.8 -0.8 -1.1 -0.0 -0.2 0.5 -0.4

ENSO region 3.4 readings for the same time frame:

1.2 1.0 0.8 0.5 0.2 0.2 0.2 0.0 -0.2

A quicker demise of the El Nino event than 1958, which made a significant difference in US temperatures that summer; however, SOI values were still predominately negative. Thus we did not see any weak La Nina develop.

1973: SOI values for January-September:

-0.8 -3.2 0.3 -0.3 0.4 1.3 0.9 1.7 2.3

ENSO region 3.4 readings for that period:

1.8 1.2 0.5 -0.1 -0.6 -0.9 -1.1 -1.3 -1.4

The transition from strongly negative SOI to strongly positive by May/June caused in part the development and intensification of a La Nina (already moderate by late summer).

1988: SOI values Jan-Sept:

-0.3 -1.4 0.1 -0.1 1.3 -0.4 1.7 2.2 3.4

ENSO region 3.4 readings:

0.7 0.5 0.1 -0.2 -0.7 -1.2 -1.3 -1.2 -1.3

Again, positive SOI values and La Nina conditions ensued at roughly the same time.

1995: SOI values Jan-Sept:

1.0 -0.8 0.4 -1.8 -1.2 -0.4 0.6 -0.1 0.5

ENSO region 3.4 readings:

1.2 0.9 0.7 0.4 0.3 0.2 0.0 -0.2 -0.5

Notice the SOI did not reverse as strongly positive this summer (remained near neutral) and thus ENSO also remained near neutral for the summer.

1998: SOI values Jan-Sept:

5.4 -4.4 -5.7 -3.2 0.1 1.2 2.0 1.6 2.0

ENSO region 3.4 readings:

2.3 1.9 1.5 1.0 0.5 0.0 -0.5 -0.8 -1.0

And finally this year’s SOI thus far – Jan to April 2010:

-2.5 -3.5 -2.3 2.0

Note that transition – a reversal from -2.3 to 2.0 in a one-month period! More impressive than even 1998. Our warm March/April was largely due a continued moderate El Nino and collapse of the record negative NAO/AO block of February. But now we’re already in a La Nina global state based on the SOI! Essentially, this narrows down the analog years quite well. Of the years I examined – 1958, 1966, 1973, 1988, 1995, and 1998, the closest matches for SOI reversals are 1973, 1988, and 1998, which were all at least weak La Nina’s by midsummer. I don’t believe ENSO will level off at neutral like 1958 and 1966; we should continue the decline into a La Nina the second half of this summer (possibly rapidly).
Global atmospheric angular momentum (GLAAM) supports this turn to La Nina conditions as we flip into a negative GLAAM regime. Essentially the rotational speed of the Earth is decreasing, which will heighten the easterly tropical trade winds in the Pacific thereby promoting upwelling and cold water expansion westward.



3)Models – ECMWF, CFS, and statistical/dynamical model forecasts are in solid consensus that we’ll attain weak La Nina status sometime in the June-July time frame. Some individual members are more bullish on the arrival of the La Nina than others, but most portray the same general idea. The ECMWF seems to be the most bullish on intensity.

Key Assumptions for summer 2010:

-Negative/cold PDO for the next several months
-Positive/warm AMO (i.e., a warm Atlantic ocean overall)
-Weak La Nina status will be attained by June or more likely July in region 3.4.
-Strong negative AO/NAO of this past winter will neutralize for the summer.
-Positive SOI/Positive GLAAM will persist through the upcoming summer.
- High likelihood that at least 2 out of 3 summer months will be at or above normal temp wise.

Primary consideration analogs: 1998, 1973, 1988, 1995
Secondary consideration Analogs: 1958, 1966

I anticipate the meteorological summer, JJA, to look similar to this map overall:

Summer Outlook 2010

NYC:

Temperature departures:

June: 0 to +1
July: +1 to +2
August: +1 to +2
JJA temp departure: +0.5 to +1.5
Precip:
June: Above average
July: Below average
August: Below average
JJA precip: Slightly below average

Notes: Northeast region departures should be very similar to those pinpointed for NYC in June, July and August. Precip will be more below normal the further south one heads down the east coast. August will be the warmest month nationwide relative to normal. Overall, a warmer than normal summer is on tap for the Mid-west and MS River eastward – with periods of scorching heat likely.

Not understanding all your detailed analog or models/abbreviations and what they mean. Does seem like a winner to me! Maybe my water bill will double/triple as I don't have a well. Had quotes of between $4500 to $5G+ depending on the feet down. I'm not sure the water table can water the 3/4 acre year in and year out. Maybe anyone from this area have any input please advise. With abundant sunshine and warm pool temps it will be a great summer I'm hoping. Looking forward too some extreme TS and great lightning shows.

Storm- Good write-up. Nicely done. My issue with LT outlooks remain, even though you did a nice job of explaining everything.

I think summer outlooks are easier and probably higher accuracy than winter. You are not dealing with snow and patterns are longer in duration plus thye jetstream roles are less complicated. Hurricanes are another story though.

Kelli - I think this summer will be worlds apart from last summer in terms of pool weather. It'll be a welcome change from my POV as the past few summers have been erratic and poor beach/pool wise. As far as water, I don't think we'll need to start worrying about that until later in the summer. Even with 1-2 months of little rain here, there are still giant ponds of water around in fields which never existed prior to this winter. Reservoirs are full and can handle a decent dry period.

Agree they are a little easier. Although in the grand scheme of things its still a long range outlook, so approach with caution.

Thanks! I see the early part of the summer as being most active T-storm wise w/ the baroclinic zone nearby. Although June should be above normal temps, cool air will be just to the north so I expect above normal rainfall/storms. Most of the analogs shared June as the wetter/stormier month. July and August will feature occasional convection (which could be intense when it happens due to the heat I'm anticipating) but the pattern overall should be a much drier one Jul-Aug as the La Nina takes control. In fact by late August I think we'll be hoping for tropical cyclones to help us in the rain department. So overall, I'm going slightly below normal pcpn, and considering the warmer than normal regime, most of our pcpn should come from T-storms. Tough to say if T-storms will be above or below normal, but I believe the first half of the summer will feature many more opportunities.

My main regret was not going more extreme with the heat. The above average departures were correct for all three summer months; however, the actual departures were quite a bit higher than I thought in June and July. With that said, this was the hottest summer on record in NYC by 0.5, which means the 2nd hottest summer had a temp departure of +3.0, and the rest of the top 10 between +1.5 and +3.0. So it would have been very difficult to nail this summer as the warmest on record from a long range standpoint.

With that said, the warm signals were there and they certainly verified. My analog years of 1988, 1973, 1995 all fared well. In the end, the forecast was good but needed to be a bit more intense with the heat.

Can't blame you for erring on the conservative side. July was almost 5 degrees above average -- wow. It was definitely a hot summer.

I'm tough on you but that's because the incidence of being off in temp is second to me vs being right about the pattern. Your call on the pattern and it's persistence was excellent. That's 80% of the battle in my book. If someone doesn't get the pattern right or near right I throw the forecast out as wrong because the temp validation, if it ends up right is an acciident. So likewise in this case I'd score the grade a lot higher. It works both ways for me Storm. D'ont score yourself badly on a pattern you were close to nailing and d'ont try to make yourself right on a pattern you missed. In this case - and again in my book - you get a high score.

Thanks for the kind words. After reading over your post, you've made me rethink the way I grade the forecasts. I may be too glued on the difference b/t forecast and actual temp values and not enough weight on the pattern persistence. Especially in a season like this where the final departure was well above 95% of years, so more leeway should be given. What do you think about a revise up to B/B+ grade? I know we've had our disagreements with LR forecasting but I have a lot of respect for your opinions.

Nice work Storm. Totally agree with what ice is saying. A LT forecast can be right by accident sometimes because of the #'s game. The pattern is the most important and you recognized it early on.

Thanks Sat, it's appreciated. I think with this summer in particular, the temp departures were so much higher than most above normal summers, that it's fair/reasonable to give a higher grade. The top 5-10 hottest summers in NYC for example for nearly a full degree lower than this one (+2.5 rather than +3.5). So I agree with you guys.

It was an enjoyable summer and hopefully we have another like it soon.

nice work with the summer forecast. my neighbor owns his own landscraping buisness, i told him it was gonna be hot and dry this summer from ur L/T and he reminds me of it all the time. "your info is better than the mets on tv!"

Gotta say well done Storm. I wouldn't worry too much about the temp difference as I doubt anyone could have predicted that. You nailed this summer dead on. Unfortunately. Now tell us we're going to have a cool summer next year! biggrin.gif

For the Northeast region as a whole, this was the 3rd hottest on record. The Southeast had it's warmest summer in the 116 years of record keeping.
