Arizona is only doing this because idiots in Congress like Menendez don't have the courage to create a federal law to deal with this mess for fear of losing the Hispanic vote in future elections. Typical politicians; cover your own butt instead of doing what's right for the nation at large. Do you blame people in Arizona for being fed up and taking matters into their own hands? God forbid we want the law of the land to be enforced and to know what people are doing here. Wanting law and order these days somehow equates to being a racist according to some people. I don't care if you're from Mexico or Belgium. If you want to come to this country, do so legally and make a contribution through work and paying taxes. Don't come over here with your hand out, because I certainly wouldn't waltz into someone else's country expecting the moon. This country has become so ***-backwards, it's sad.

I'm generally liberal on most political issues. Yet I fail to understand, nor do I agree with, the uproar over the new Arizona immigration law. The regulation simply gives law enforcement the right to ask for documentation to prove that someone is legally present in the US from anyone they suspect may be illegal. Are there going to be people asked to show papers who are legal? Sure, but no different than the police having the right to ask to see valid license and registraion at road checks. Would I be upset if the police in Arizona asked to see that I have legal status here? Not even for a moment as it's being done for the good of the country. The only people the law is intended to target and weed out are illegals. If others are "incovenienced" in the execution of that, it's no different than being "incovenienced" by having to go through metal detectors at airports. Maybe I'm not as liberal as I thought I was.

I think it's just common sense; it doesn't really have anything to do with political leanings IMHO. And enough already with the racist argument to try and shoot down anyone who dares to ask that the law of the land be enforced. This is how you know the other side is wrong; when the facts aren't on your side, start hurling insults and accusations because that's all you've got. Shouldn't we know what people are doing here and whether or not they legally have a right to be here in the first place? Did we learn nothing from 9/11? The real scary part are the drug wars going on along the US/Mexico border. Gunfights, people being kidnapped, narcotics being smuggled into the country, etc. It's a definite public safety issue that needs to be addressed. Besides, if you're here legally, what do you have to hide? Show your documentation and be done with it. And anyone comparing this to Nazi Germany seriously needs to have his or her head examined. We're not rounding up six million people from their rightful homes and executing them the way Hitler did, nor are people being placed in concentration camps. Any type of comparison such as this shows an appaling ignorance of history and a total lack of respect for the memory of those who perished during the Holocaust.

Wow, we agree. LOL

Lets see, if this is wrong then how about when police stop people a a DWI check point? Or one of the random stops to check for Licence, registration and INS. Or the the stops they set up for over due car inspection stickers?? And how about the new one where all 17-19 year old new drivers have to put a red reflecter on the car to let the police know that the are new???? (In NJ ) And that alone gives them the right to check them.

Yes, we are all immigrints, but most of us did it the legal way.

BTW- Its not just from mexico. They say a large part is do to all the student visias they give out. They come to school and don't leave.

The Today Show this morning ran a segment on Arizona's law and mentioned prominently and repeatedly, as part of their coverage, that this nation was built on the hard work of immigrants. It's astounding to me that they make no distincction between legal and illegal immigrants. It all seems a losing cause as the outcry by mainstream media, entertainment, and many political circles is so against Arizona's law. Might as well take away all the border patrol; what's the point anyway? Simply amazing.

Exactly. There is a difference, and a major one at that. The immigrants who came here via Ellis Island were required to speak English, assimilate to our society and make a contribution through work and paying taxes. My God, they were even checked for any diseases that could potentially spread to others and cause an epidemic. Can you imagine the uproar CBS, NBC, etal. would have made if they were around 100 years ago? God forbid that we are a nation of law and order. However, if an illegal sneaks over here and pulls off a terrorist attack or kidnapps and kills an American citizen, everyone is going to be asking why the government didn't do more. Sorry, but you can't have it both ways. These folks are living in la-la land; no sense of reality whatsoever.

I still think that there are more people who want the laws enforced than there are who basically want a free-for-all. You're seeing that in a lot of the primary results for Congressional races. A longtime Republican incumbent in Utah was just routed by a candidate favored by the Tea Party movement. I really think there is going to be a bloodbath for any current officeholder come November. A lot of people have simply had it with the present state of affairs.

Gotta love this. Watch his family sue for millions
