Aside from Arizona and other areas of the desert SW, which are notorious for flash flooding and can get them on just a quarter to a half inch of rain beacuse of the terrain, this may be the worst flash flooding I ever saw. Amazing that storms at 3-4am would have this type of rainfalll.

Here's the radar showing the extremity of the heaviest rain, and all the training of very heavy rains that ocurred before it. The only time I ever saw a pink radar signature was when I was in Myrtle Beach when a stalled storm over the beach itself dropped 7" of rain in less than an hour, probably in a seabreeze induced event and one with only minor lightning. Less than a mile further west there was no rain so that was a very localized oddball event. This one was widespread, had a lot of dynamics and caused horrendous damage and loss of life.
