not sure....is it around a "butterfly" tree/bush. i think we saw the same creature last week. does it kinda hover like a hummingbird?

That's actually the long wood handle of a rake. That sucker is big and yes it does hover. The wings look like 747 wings in shape but they aren't unusually big. The synmetry on the wings is incredible. My thought is that it's a large caterpillar that just morphed tp some type of moth or is still morphing. In it's initial flight I thought it was a carpenter bee but we are past that season and clearly it's not one.

funny, i too thought it was some sort of morphed creature. i thought it resembled a butterfly with insect type wings. gotta be 2 inches right? send a pic to rutgers.?

A beautiful white tailed dragon fly. Look at the eyes in the second & third pix.
