The Blackout of 1977

Remember it well.I was 7yrs old.Had alot of fun, spent most of the day and night outside.walking around with flashlights and playing hide & seek outside in the pitch black.was probably uncofortable sleeping but don't remember. All I can remember is all the fun we had at night.

I remember this well too. I was living on the north shore of LI (NW Suffolk Cty) at the time watching the storms growing over the Hudson Valley. In the type of pattern in place then, storms in that position typically moved eastward into SW and southern CT and did not effect LI. This one was different. After lingering for a while over the Hudson Valley they turned SE and moved across the LI Sound. There was a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (or whatever term was used back then for that type of storm) issued for Nassau Cty as it moved through there. The blackout itself effected NYC and parts of Nassau. In any case the rest is history.

Here's a more detailed technical discussion of how the blackout unfolded. This piece also discusses some other major blackouts as well.
