Ice, I showed the photo of that insect to an entomologist friend. He says it's in the family of sphingidae.

i would say thats it! thanks. look at some of the popular species listed. the death head one is really cool...from silence of the lambs poster.

i swear this is the one i saw, though it doesn't fit the distibution profile

Just like birds the female doesn't have the same bright and distingued colors as males species, I would guess it would the same for insects. Could be the same insect, as male specimens are mostly photographs for their color, whether it be insects or mammals their brilliance are most photographed.
