MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1434
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0436 PM CDT FRI JUL 23 2010

AREAS AFFECTED...LOWER HUDSON VALLEY / NYC METRO

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY 521...

VALID 232136Z - 232230Z

SEVERE POTENTIAL IS INCREASING ACROSS THE LOWER HUDSON RIVER VALLEY
AND INTO THE NYC MEGALOPOLIS. MAIN THREATS WILL LIKELY BE DMGG
WINDS BUT AN ISOLD TORNADO IS POSSIBLE...A WW WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED
WITHIN THE HOUR.

RECENT SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACES A WARM FRONTAL ZONE EXTENDING FROM
LONG ISLAND WNWWD TOWARDS NERN PA. THE AIRMASS S OF THIS BOUNDARY
IS CHARACTERIZED AS VERY MOIST/UNSTABLE. RADAR MOSAIC IMAGERY OVER
THE PAST 30 MINUTES SHOWS A DEVELOPING SUPERCELL OVER SUSQUEHANNA
COUNTY PA AND THIS WILL LIKELY MOVE SEWD ALONG THE INSTABILITY
GRADIENT. RELATIVELY BACKED SLY LOW LEVEL FLOW VEERING TO STRONG
WNWLY MID LEVEL FLOW IS CONTRIBUTING TO SUBSTANTIAL LOW LEVEL SHEAR
/IN EXCESS OF 300 M2/S2 0-1 KM SRH/. AS SUCH...A WW WILL LIKELY BE
NEEDED WITHIN THE HOUR TO ACCOUNT FOR A DMGG WIND THREAT AND
INCREASING TORNADO POTENTIAL.

ABC tv actually mentioned West Milford NJ in the path of this tornado. That's quite a stretch for a storm still so far away. However, a dynamic evening, weatherwise, may be coming up for some in our area.

CBS also mentioned West Milford, which i thought also was a bit of a stretch, because they also mentioned my town and it's a good distance from Harriman to West Milford. Looks like more of a chance for you than me according to the radar.

I can hear the thunder and the storm is like 40 miles away. Looks like the second storm is taking over, if so Robbs and I can see a nice storm.

55K feet cloud top on that storm. There's one in central Pa at 64,000 ft. It doesn't get much worse than a 64K foot storm.

Storm rolled through here with impressive thunder/lightning; some house shattering boomers, heavy rain. No hail; peak gust was only 24 mph; picked up 0.65" of rain in 10 minutes.

Lab -- You must have called my mobile. BTW, as I posted earlier, a mile difference in these cells is day and night. Don't get me wrong -- pretty impressive thunderstorm, but nothing unusual and that we don't see several times each season, at least as far what ocurred here this evening. Recorded 0.99" for the day and 4.33" for July thus far.

The storm and rain intensity at Yankee stadium is amazing and lasting a long time. Got to be some huge short-term rain totals there. Meanwhile down here it is still 88.6.

Here's your lightning Kellie. Under the right circumstances you see lightning very far away but to hear thunder far away is not easy. Often down in Myrtle Beach I'll see lightning striking the ocean at night way off shore but it's rare that I hear the thunder even though the lighting comes all the way down. Also if something is developing very quickly it may not be on radar yet. That was the case here with the storms this past Monday. I saw them just NE of me but radar didn't have them till 10 mins later.

BTW - I can also see that lightning to the NE and it's quite bright for me and I'm well SW of you.

Rgwp -- No hail here; peak wind gust 24 mph (although with trees in full bloom nearby, probably gusted to about 35 mph). Defining element here was vivid lightning and heavy rain -- 0.83" (0.65" recorded in under 10 minutes).

Well not sure for here, we were in the pool and the lighting started, my neighbor said there was T/W for the NYC area not per-say Monmouth Cty. Listening to the Yank's on the radio hearing about the downpour, then we saw lighting to our NNW with clear skies as far as we could see and hearing thunder we immediately got out of the pool. Not knowing much about weather, I would of never thought about lighting looking at surrounding blue skies, much less seeing the strikes turning the skies a pink color. And as I mentioned looking at three different radars showing nothing.

Very doubtful. But some future radars have a threat for NW NJ into NYC with another localized batch again around 3am or so. TV reports tonight said that storm that came across was a supercell with winds to 50+ and it showed rotation aloft over 2 hours. Very unusual for our area.

BTW - my wife said she saw Nick Gregory on both Ch 5 and Ch 9 tonight. Is there some kind of an affiliation agreement that allows him to work for 2 stations in one market? Anyone else see this?

Best storm in a while, however Im lucky to be alive. Me and my sister were driving home when the storm was occurring. We were forced to seek shelter in a Kmart.

VERY strong winds and HEAVY rain. All of a sudden the power goes out and everyone in the store was screaming and what not.

Lightning strikes a pole literally 2 feet away from me. My eye sight completely went for a good 20 seconds. It was so loud I just put my head in my arms. Once my eye sight came back, I couldnt hear for 10 minutes. I actually thought I messed up this time. Thank god it came back.

Craziest storm experience ever.
