The NWS 90 day outlook for June, July, August indicates a better than 33% probability of above normal temps and normal precip for us. Their 90 day outlook for July, August, September shows a better than 40% probability of above normal temps and normal precip. I know their outlooks are a bit confusing because their starting point is equal chances above and below the norm. Suffice to say their outlook, if correct, is calling for a hot summer.

Wouldn't that mean that there is a 67% chance that it is below normal?

I think what they mean is there is a 33% chance above a 50-50 chance, if that makes sense. ???

That's correct. The NWS has taken a lot of criticism for their confusing outlook structure.

Robbs,

Do you know if the NWS is factoring in a La Nina presence in this 90 day outlook?  I thought La Nina could play a role as far as seeing tropical storms or hurricanes on this part of the east coast?
