5 in New York City and
1 in Rockland County.

For northeast New Jersey...

Interestiing that Suffolk leads the way, it is the most coastal of the counties listed, possibly the largest in area also.

OrangeCountyWeather06
Are you apart of the NWS in Upton? Nope.
weatherbowl
Virgaman--it did not include Dutchess. Only extreme southeast N.Y. and northeast N.J.

Interesting...

Wow, only 2 in Essex County in nearly 50 years.  I guess I'm pretty safe, lol!

Weatherbowl -- Your right about suffolk. It's near the water so in retrospect, it should have the least # of tornadoes due to stabilized maritime air, but it is a very big county so that # doesn't surprise me. I bet most if not all the tornadoes happened from Islandia points west. Lets remember, last summer there was a potential tornado in Lindenhurst (suffolk co), not sure if that was ever confirmed, but the one in Massapequa (nassau co) was confirmed. Also, do you remember the July 12th tornado in Westchester? I think I remember hearing reports of that tornado initially making landfall in Rockland before skipping across the Hudson River & damaging parts of Westchester, I wonder if that report above of 1 tornado in Rockland was in fact from the storm last year...

If you look @ the geography of Rockland, the mountain range lining the west side of the county does protect it from tornado development I would imagine.

I think most of the tornadoes for NYC happened in Queens, one damaged parts of Jamaica if I remember correctly, and there were several just offshore.

Only four tornadoes in Passaic County in 50 years? The stats seem odd, as I know of two confirmed tonadoes in 2 successive years in West Milford (Passaic County) in the mid 1990's. The grand daddy for Passiac County, however, occured in the early 20th century in Paterson when a killer tornado ripped through that city. I've read reports that estimate that tornado to have been an F3 or F4 based on the damage inflicted.

I bet that some of the Suffolk tornadoes started out as waterspouts that made landfall.

Robbs, you have any info on that mid 90s West Milford tornado?  I wonder if it is the same storm that sparmed a small tornado in the the area of that public golf course on newton-sparta road, right on the border of the 2 towns, in the mid 90s.  Lots of large trees ripped up near the edge of the course.

I also distinctly recall in the mid 80s, listening to my weather radio (pre internet, pre cable, no TWC for me!) that there was a funnel cloud spotted in Pequannock.  Were you around for that?

Anything on Sussex County?
el bliizzardo diablo
hey snowshoe,

One of the more recent Sussex storms was a small tornado June 1, 2004, at High point.  Here is a link to some photos of hail from the same storm, and a few blurbs on it:
