Blog: Science Temperature Monitors Report Widescale Global Cooling
Michael Asher (Blog) - February 26, 2008 12:55 PM

World Temperatures according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. Note the steep drop over the last year.
Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out nearly all the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.

Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.

Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.

Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly

We're all going to freeze to death! Quick, move further south, closer to the equator!

In all seriousness, this is interesting and lends more credence to the idea that the sun has more influence over the Earth's climate than anything else.

So how long will this cooling trend last I wonder? And what if anything will it mean for summer?

I hope people realize that even if global warming is not a threat, or if the next ice age is, we still need to stop spewing out harmful pollutants from cars and factories and we need to preserve forests, etc. we still need to breathe.

That I agree with. Anything that smells as nasty as some of those fumes can't be good for you.

The government needs to focus on funding public transportation much more. Just look at how bad Amtrak is doing or look at the MTA now - plus they just raised the fare on the subway, MNRR and LIRR.
NYBrit
If the local bus drivers on SI would stop letting people get on the buses without paying the MTA would make a LOT more money and wouldn't need to raise the fares!

well forget that, you used the magic word...gov't. sorcerer.png

it's a crock that the media...once again...has failed to report this. shame. the lose more cred. every day.

Cold temp is more damaging than heat..If the temp will continuously drop down we will have a little ice age that goes colder and colder..Climate change is the end product of global warming..This is a major concern for all of us..

Do you also believe in Chem Trials?

You mean this false clouds in the sky that are being leave by jet aircraft..they do that in order to be not detected or seen..But I don't really know if those were harmful chemicals spread all over.. I have read the conspiracy theory behind this..

There is some truth to that. One of the theories is that the Earth and atmosphere is always in the process of trying to reach perfect balance. Hence why we have weather. More warmth may eventually have to be balanced with more cold, a.k.a an ice age. Hence in the Day After Tomorrow, the gulf stream shuts down bc of too much melting and more freshwater.

The book The Coming Global Superstorm which predicted that global warming may cause extreme harmful climate..that could be possible due to the evidence of preserve mammoths that has been found with food in their mouths and undigested in their stomachs..which turned out to be they had been quickly frozen..Maybe that was cause by rapid blizzard that time..

if only the mammoths had hybrids. poor fellas. this is my point, pro global warming fanatics are saying its getting so warm that we will begin to cool until we freeze. spin it baby! look back at the 70's, newsweek was printing that earth will freeze crops will die and people will follow. hype.

That !970's imminent cooling of earth was a hypothesis..it never had significant scientific support..

i guess if the noaa and nas doesn't have scientific data then i guess your right, problem is the article bases informatin from both these source. 30 years ago this is what they thought would happen. today they think something will happen. 30 years form now....goes on and on. one idea was to put soot on the polar caps to melt them. perhapse they did that fear.png . http://www.businessandmedia.org/specialrep.../fireandice.asp

I also don't trust these computer models, which can easily be manipulated by the people who input data.
liveweatherman
Though this earth cooling might be true..the only thing is that they make exaggerate stories and too soon speculations thus no concrete evidence and still need to be studied first and research..So whether this news will be on public there too many stories would come up and big issues...
