Full Version: New Board Feature: Display your Current Conditions

I just finished coding a really neat feature. It is now possible for you to input your location, and have the current conditions for that location be displayed beside each of your posts using data from Weather Underground. Look to the left of this post for an example.

To utilize this feature:

1) Click here, or go to My Controls > Edit Profile Information

2) In the "Current Conditions: City Name" box, type ONLY the name of your town/city. Example: Secaucus
Important: If your city is more than one word, you must replace spaces with underscores ( _ ). For example, South Brunswick must be entered as South_Brunswick.

3) In the "Current Conditions: State Initials" box, type ONLY the two-letter abbreviation for your state. Example: NJ
Note: N.J. will NOT work. Do not include the dots.

4) Click "Amend My Profile"

That's it! Weather Underground will take the latest conditions from the weather station in or nearest to that town and display them here.

Thanks for adding this feature.

FYI to those who may add it. It assigns you a nearby "local" weather station location for current observations. You can change it by going to forecasts, then selecting from a list of locations. The closest I can get is about 4 miles west of me.

The site keeps statistics and recent observations. At the bottom of the page, you can see all of your local stations.

BM, How did you know where your station was? Forget it, just saw that mine comes from Yankee Lake in Wurtsboro and up here by me can be a whole different world from Wurtsboro, so I would imagine it will not be exactly accurate, but pretty close most of the time.

Thanks.

snowamp, you could use monticello airport as your station, that might be more accurate as far as temps and conditions to your location in rock hill.

I think I will change it, Yankee Lake is about 500 feet lower in elevation than me. Thanks.
Just changed it, see if it works.....

You should see them for anyone who is using the feature. Everyone that has posted in this thread is using it, so you should be able to see it for them as well.

Edit:
Never mind. I fixed the problem happy.png

By the way, most of you probably didn't notice this, but there was an issue with the images not updating as often as they could be. Most of the images should update every minute or two (depending upon the station it is getting data from), however the browser tried to cache the images. If you tried to load a page that had the same sticker(s) on it you were recently viewing, it didn't always show the most updated data. This has been fixed by adding a random variable to the end of the images, tricking your browser into thinking each one is different.

Try a local weather station. The one listed in my sig is my own station that is posted

Nice Feature...thanks for taking the time to put this together...

This is cool instead of everyone cramming temps in a thread.
