I was in Kingston N.Y. today and crossed the Hudson at the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge. The Hudson is frozen solid at that location, from shore to shore. You could see a tanker had been thru in the last day or so but even that was refrozen. They had about a foot of snow. Looked nice.

The Hudson River is almost completely frozen from Garrison to Beacon.
Take a ride on the Metro North Hudson Line and you can really see how thick the ice is.

I disagree completely. :)
Central NJ is the thunderstorm capital (anywhere from northern Ocean Co to SW Monmouth Co out to Wall Twnshp) I can't tell you how many times I have ran into severe storms in that area while @ Six Flags. I get home and see that was the only storm coming through the area all day. I always remember Icehater saying things about Wall Twp.
Also, SW NJ (Burlington Co?) is a good zone.
Satellite_Eyes will back me up on this one: There is an area in NE PA (Northern Pike Co) and Sullivan Co NY (Southern Part) near Shahola PA and Barryville NY that gets some impressive t-storms. This areas t-storms seem to be affected by the tremendous peaks and valleys carved out by the Delaware River. Very interesting micro-climate. Storm can explode in that area (my cousin lives in the same area and I have seen it first hand) and die out while entering Northern Sussex Co and SW Orange Co. One time we were in the pool up in Eldred and it was sunny and humid. After 5 minutes, no longer, it was getting pitch black to our south. You could hear loud cracks of thunder and see vivid lightning to our south. Storm just grazed us but later after we went to PA to get dinner, the area was hit hard by a severe cell. I love that area. Very interesting weather.

You could be right Geek, but as Virgaman said it is just a joke. Poughkeepsie does seem to get their fair share, however. They are at least the thunderstorm capitol of the Hudson Valley, anyway. :)

Weathergeek, you are right. It is amazing some of the storms that form in Pike County PA. I remember when that tordado hit Promisedland area. I was up on High point watching the storm. It was very impresive. What is strange as soon as it hits the Kittatinny ridge the storms seem to just break apart at my house. They go south and north of me. It is very rare that I get a direct hit from thunderstorms. I will get nasty winds a few drops of rain and then the sun. I guess it has something to do with the shape of the ridge by me.

Snowshoe, sorry I forgot to mention you in my previous post (not sure if I mentioned the 1st Annual 7online board hike) but we did have this conversation while looking @ Pike County from High Point. What an interesting area. I am convinced the t-storm development has much to do with Hawks Nest (major cliffs on the NY side of the Delaware River) as the topography carved out by the river helps t-storm development by updrafts and downdrafts. @ least thats what we speculated if I remember correctly.........very interesting...Love staying in Sullivan Co in the summer and whenever we have a line of storms progged to come through, we always take a ride to Hawk's Nest to see the t-storm development.

Just a quick note, as this has never happened to us in 12 years. Husband and boys were out on lake snow mobliling today, and hubby took a break while boys were still out. He was still walking on side of lake by my house, and fell through up to his waste, which is about how deep it is on my shore line. He was scared, brought kids in and said he will not go back out, nor the kids. I do not understand, as our lake is frozen solid, but I guess nothing is ever safe.

Glad he is ok, I would never go on a like unless I made sure that there was no way I would fall through. Maybe the vibrations of the snow Mobil and the sun made the ice weak in spots, but that just shows you nothing should be taken for granted.

Wow, Did he get hurt. I wonder if there is a under ground spring ?
I went ice fishing on Monksville (sp?) today with a friend an our kids. The ice was about 10" Did not get anything. I drove by Oak Ridge Res. and it still had several open spots on it.
We fished LK Hopacon (sp) last Sun. and the ice was about 7" with open spots. When we were out there the ice shifted. like an earthquake one part of the ice lifted up about 18 " into the air for a length of 100' and water poured up. Well to put it nice I think I needed to change my pants after that!

SNOWAMP -- Glad he's ok. Guess you need a real full winter of cold temps to be 100% safe on those lakes.
LBA94 -- I was on 23 yesterday headed towards Mtn Creek and there is one lake and 1 resorvior that was completely frozen over with snow on it. It looked beautiful. I believe the lake was Echo Lake. What a nice area in NJ.

Weathergeek, Echo Lake is not on route 23 but about 2 miles north of it on Echo Lake Road. You had to be seeing either Charlotteburg or Oak Ridge Reservoirs. BTW, I'm about 15 minutes north of Echo Lake.

Thanks Robbbs. Yes Charlottsburg reservior sounds familiar, and I believe the next one was a lake..or maybe it was Oak Ridge Res..
I saw Canistear Rd exit off 23, but took Stockholm Rd (CR 515) to 94. Beautiful road.
