Today I was looking through the past winters topics, and noticed how unorganized it can get sometimes.

In my opinion, we should have one topic per storm forecasting, and another for obs.

A new topic just for each and every model run isnt all that nessecary and can get very confusing sometimes because of how active it can get here.

What do ya think Brett?

EDIT: as for Severe wx. season, its fine as users dont rely on every single model run when looking where the best parameters will set up, and therefore everything goes into one topic, which is nice and organized.

This board already does that for the reasons you mention above.

We try to keep it as orginized as possible throughout the winter, most of the time we do have multiple threads for Obs/Discussion and prediction. There really is no way to keep a thread 100% organized, come winter there can be over 100 new posters who do not know how we operate, therefore they will post in the wrong thread. Good idea, we already thought of it thumbsup.png

Im talking more of making it a board guideline, which should be read by all new users.

Very few people read and fully understand the board guidelines, no matter what you do your still going to have that one person make a thread for IMBY obs. That person willbecdelt with ny moderators. All in all the system we wr3 currently utilizing works well fpr the most part

Well, I would vote yes to making you a Mod to help them out this winter. I have a feeling its going to be very busy!! But not for the good reasons. console.gif

I don't really have an issue with weenies and kids asking questions and being all hyped up. Lets face it, if we weren't there at some point this board wouldn't exist. My problem is sometimes people don't make enough threads. They'll talk about two or three days worth of model runs under 1 thread. I don't have time to sift through 15 pages of posts. Its much better to have a 12z GFS thread; a 12Z NAM thread; an 18Z GFS thread, etc. When the newest run comes out, lock the previous thread. It will keep things organized and people can focus on the latest data.

Winter is a very busy (and stressful) time for us. By that time, our board should be upgraded to a newer version of the software which includes some tools to help streamline moderation and dealing with reported posts. So that'll help us.

I'm gonna move this to OT as I'm interested in hearing suggestions and I think it'll get some more attention there.

Most threads like that get shut down or folks leave them for dead. For the most part there is one dominating thread per storm as you lead into it and then a dominating data an obs or nowcast thread during it. So the board really isn't all that deviated from the type of organization that you desire. You do get folks here who occassionally start a thread on items that are already very well discussed and at times it's accidental and at others it comes across as self serving. You can easily separate out the accidents from the self servers as the latter do it several times, especially with winter storms. I was always a proponent of keeping the TV and other Met forecasts/speculation out of the data threads where real good discussionms were taking place. It's frustrating to have a meaningful discussion going and then suddenly you're reading a page about what every TV and radio Met was saying, or worse yet what Henry is saying, causing the deeper discussion to fall off the table. I'll exclude JB on this as he does put out good meteorological theory that lends to the more meaningful discussion of what could happen whereas Henry just quotes the GFS and then quotes how wrong it is when it inevitably turns on him. What we should have is a storm potential thread (theory), a storm reality thread during (data, obs nowcast), and then the latter becomes a post analysis/results thread. All the what will I get IMBY questions and TV Met threads and the ones that go nowhere should get collapsed into a miscellaneous thread. I think if that starts to happen folks will stop starting threads that don't do anything constuctive for the board. Right now those tthreads are either stopped with the red X or they just show up on the board with few replies and stay there forever. That's understandable in non-local weather or other threads Sports, Politics. OT) but in the local weather arena every thread should have merit to it and be constructive to the board.

Also as you get close to the storm there is nothing wrong with a models thread per day. I agree a model run thread per each model run is overkill. But grouping all the models into a unified thread per day is actually a good thing as it gives you a chance to go back to any days thread page and see what model was best at predicting the outcome. Having them all in one thread for all days or individually for each run time is too much data that gets lost or too many threads that go nowhere.
